The unglamorous machinery that decides whether progress reaches people — and where doing good does the most good.
We write at the meeting point of two ideas that usually ignore each other: that societies can deliberately get better, and that effort should go where it does the most good.
In rich countries those debates orbit invention and philanthropy. In low- and middle-income ones, both run through the state — it adopts the technology, funds the program, enforces the rule, delivers the service, or fails to.

That capacity is badly under-discussed by both movements, and it's where the leverage is. We cover it seriously and in plain language — celebrating what works, and grappling honestly with what doesn't.
